here are some comments from the website:- The crab approach was correct up to a point- say 500 feet. What needed to happen next, assuming the crosswinds were within limits of the airplane( typically 30 knots), was to get the left wing down( left aileron) and right rudder applied to kill the drift. If at that point you cant hold the alignment with the runway then go around. The pilot never got out of the crab and big airplanes are not designed to land in a crab except for the Air Forces C-5. Landing in a significant crab could result in the gear collapsing.4 Replies

I use to be a mechanic on B-52's and KC-135's and the other experience is trying to land on very thin ice with a crosswind. While the steering can compensate to the angle of plane, and pilot training exists for ice and wind, it is still a landing that cannot be 100 percent assured. Experienced pilots who deal with ice & wind risk their life and their careers without much choice many times over.4 Replies

王老板 29 minutes ago Report AbuseYou are supposed to land in that configuration with a cross-wind. But at what velocity wash the crosswind? Looks like it exceeded the maximum. As you slow, your control surfaces are less useful and that crab position is correct but he wisely went around and decided full power abort. There really is nothing to see here. Happens every day except he should have double checked with the tower about maximum cross winds. Obviously they only had that runway, which is why many airports have two or three so he can land straight into the wind. I would say he handled it well and his rudder was insufficient to straighten the nose as he approached ground level.

--LOVE IT! First time I saw those videos and saw that it was Emirates the first thing I thought was "yep... Those Emirates pilots are pretty damn good!" I mean I'm glad the plane landed safely later on. But if I was a passenger I probably would've had a heart attack seeing the runway going sorta sideways... :-/
