  • Aeroclassics Super VC-10s

Following on from my thread about Standard VC-10s (see ) we move onto the Supers. The VC-10-1150 was an attempt to appease BOAC by making the standard VC-10 longer thus giving it better economics. Alas BOAC was not easily pleased and still did its best to kill the entire VC-10 programme. Eventually however 17 stretched VC-10s were delivered to BOAC between 1965-69 whilst 5 went to East African also.

Ironically the Super was an extremely popular type in BOAC's fleet with passengers and crew and apparently they achieved higher load factors with the VC-10s than they did with 707s further going to rubbish the initial claims of BOAC (which were dodgy to begin with). The Supers continued to serve with BA into 1981 when they were retired finally done in by their high fuel costs and noisiness. Most ended up with the RAF.

If anything the Super was even more attractive than the standard VC-10 and Aeroclassics have made a lovely mould. Gemini also did have a mould for ths model but used it very rarely and I decided to standardise on the AC moulding.

AC have made 20 models and I have 5 of them:

My Sixth Aeroclassics Super VC-10 arrived a few days back - a snip at under $10. She's a beauty in her BOAC hybrid BA colours.

G-ASGG first flew in 1965 but her acceptance into service was delayed by being used in development and certification of the BAC-Elliott automatic landing device operating from RAE Bedford. The aircraft made over 560 automated landings enabling the Super VC-10s to be certified to Cat 3a standard and making BOAC the first airline to introduce these systems into airline service. After her trials she joined the regular BA fleet and served through until sale to the RAF in 1981. GG became ZD235 and was eventually one of five, of the original fourteen, converted to K.4 standard. This was a lengthier conversion than originally anticipated due to the poor storage conditions the airframes had had to endure. Serving with 101st squadron she was withdrawn in March 2002 and scrapped in 2004.
