  • My Continental Fleet 2011-2014 and What's Missing in 1:400

My CO 747 post got me thinking about the progression of my Continental fleet and I thought I'd share a few pictures and take a look at what is missing from my collection and CO 1:400 in general.

Continental was always one of the smallest trunk airlines in the regulated era - in 1954 it only had 14 aircraft (compare that to United's 178 and even smallish Delta's 49). It however did well under Bob Six and a decade later it was in rude health though it still only had 20 planes (by that time Delta had 87 and United 257). It was from there things grew and it was at about 55-65 aircraft through most of the 70s about the same size as National and Western.

This is the fleet in December 2011 when it shared a shelf with National - that's a Gemini Golden Jet 707, Dragon Golden Jet 720 and Red MD80 and Jet-X DC-10. The rest are all Aeroclassics:

Three months later and things have changed. The Gemini 707 has been replaced with an Aeroclassics example and I've added a Jet-X DC-9-10, AC CV-240 and 727-100. The MD80 has been moved elsewhere due to space issues:

Nine Months later and Continental now has its own full shelf. Additions include:
    • Aeroclassics Golden Jet 720 (replacing the DW version)
    • Aeroclassics Blue Skyway Viscount
    • Aeroclassics Black Contrails DC-10 (replacing the Jet-X version)
    • Jet-X Black Contrails 747-100
    • Gemini Jets Red Contrails DC-10-30
    • SMAC Red Contrails 737-200
    • Aeroclassics Red Contrails 737-300
    • Jet-X Red Contrails DC-9-10
    • Jet-X Red Contrails 146 (Presidential)
    • Gemini Jets 91 Clrs 737-800
    • Gemini Jets 91 Clrs 757-200

So what's left to be done:

DC-3 - Blue Skyway or Golden Jet:

    Skystreamer CV-240:

    DC-7:

Delivery clrs 707-124 (admittedly there is no short fin mould or even a real 707-100 (outside DW)):

    DC-10-10 Black Contrails:

Of course the biggest hole in the 1:400s is a Black Contrails 727-200 even though this aircraft formed the backbone of the fleet for more than a decade:

Plus the old Aeroclassics DC-6 could do with a rerelease on the new mould. So all in all just for the 1950-1980 period there's plenty to keep the manufacturers busy if they wanted to some proud birds with the golden tail. Just sayin'
