I've been on and off working on my small twin pier 1:400 scale 1960s style airport model - Dowse National - for a while now and it is almost done. One of the primary drivers for this project was to give me the ability to showcase typical airport operations as they may have appeared during certain timeframes. With the diorama approaching completion (just working on the backgrounds now) I thought I'd share some shots.
In this group we have a scene with Dowse standing in for San Fran circa 1968 though it is probably not accurate to have four different airlines on the same pier.
At the time Northwest were a year away from moving to the Orient scheme whilst it would be 1971 before the Flying W adorned Western jets. Variants of United's trusty Mainliner scheme were still the order of the day and Continental had introduced the Contrails 'Black Meatball' in 1967.
I hope to do more of these type of threads encapsulating the whole airfield in the future so think of these as just testers. Please excuse the incorrect GSE too!
