  • American DC-10-10

~~For a long time now the missing part of my AA fleet and one of my most holiest grails has been an AAA AC DC-10 so I am very pleased to finally be able to add one in the form of N102AA a series 10.

The DC-10 was the result of a specification from American and United. AA ordered 25 with 25 options and the first service was on August 5 1971 between Los Angeles and Chicago. The initial series 10 was designed for high density trunk routes. The Ten’s initial service was chequered with a cargo door failure almost causing the crash of an AA DC-10 in June 1972. Regardless American took 35 into service in two batches 1971-1973 and 1978-1980. They also bought National’s fleet from Pan Am and several of Western’s from Delta in the 1980s. Gradually replaced by 767s into the 90s most were sold to FedEx. American retired its last DC-10s in November 2000. This aircraft was purchased by Fed Ex in 1997 but was only used for spares and broken up.

Very nice model RS, I've always wanted to get my hands on this beauty but they really are a rare find. The American DC-10 takes me back to my childhood when I used to take flights from San Juan to the Northeast and just seeing about a half a dozen just parked at the American terminal of San Juan Intl. I only took a Delta DC-10 back in those days (which I have the model of the Delta DC-10 by Inflight 200 coming in this summer) but all in all RS very good info and great shots!

Bu AC just released a series 10 and a series 30 this month so they shouldn't be so rare to get now.

I've never purchased anything outside of Geminijets 1:400, maybe because I'm afraid to be disappointed with the quality. I've never purchased Phoenix or AC or Dragonwings... I've just never known which brands are worth it and which aren't....

You're missing out as Gemini especially nowadays largely produce pretty tedious stuff on average moulds. The quality of all the major 1:400 brands is equal in terms of finish but Aeroclassics almost always have the best moulds if they do that plane type. In fact I can't think of a single type which Gemini has the best mould for where there is competition between manufacturers.

They make up over 60% of my 700 models and I've sold quite a lot of Geminis when I've had the opportunity to replace them with an AC version
