Another of the classic 1980s flag carriers I enjoyed at Heathrow was Gulf Air. Multi-national National Airlines is a good idea but both Air Afrique and Gulf Air have rather come a cropper because of the disunity of their constituent parts and nowadays the idea seems rather quaint in the face of liberalised markets, pan-continental stateless airlines and mega-carriers owning smaller brands. Still Gulf Air has survived thanks largely to the willingness of Bahrain to finance their losses. Here's their story:
