  • TAA's Prop-jet Dominance Pt1: Viscounts vs DC-6s

From what I have seen Trans Australia Airlines has never gotten the publicity it has deserved. It not the private airlines (ANA and later Ansett) was the driving force in Australian air travel. This is also replicated in 1:400 - where are the TAA Convairs? Anyway today we look at its pioneering use of the Viscount:

Trans Australia embraced the turboprop and left its competitor behind endangering the government's two airline policy

TAA was a very significant force in the establishment of safe and reliable domestic air services in Australia. You're right. Much has been written about Reg Ansett, ANA and Ansett when both combined and as separate entities, Butler, MMA etc. TAA was a powerhouse but never a publicity seeker. TAA wanted Caravelles, not Electra's, TAA introduced the first wide bodies into Australian domestic service, the A300, and so the list goes on.

I think TAA, Ansett and Ansett-ANA have been pretty evenly represented. For example we've had numerous TAA Viscounts but none in any of the Ansett liveries.Plenty of jets in all liveries and so on. It would be wonderful to see TAA Convairs and Ansett Viscounts. I'm sure they will arrive in the fullness of time,
