  • REVIEW: Hobby Master HA1945 USN F-4J Phantom II, VF-114 "The Aardvarks"

Hobby Master 1/72 Air Power Series
    HA1945
    McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II
    BuNo. 157249/NH206, VF-114, USS Kitty Hawk, 1972

    Production Limited 600 Units

    September 2015 Release

On May 6, 1972 four F-4J Phantoms from VF-114 "The Aardvarks" launched from the USS Kitty Hawk on a covering assignment for a strike on the Bai Thuong airfield where it had been established that enemy MiGs were operating. It was during this mission that Lt. Bob Hughes and LtJG Joe Cruz flying F-4J 157245, and LCDR Pete Pettigrew and LtJG Mike McCabe flying F-4J 157249 each downed a North Vietnamese MiG-21.

Below: 1973 Photo of F-4 Phantoms from VF-114.

The model represents the F-4J flown that day by Hughes and Cruz and is particularly attractive in the Orange "Aardvarks" paint scheme.

The quality of the model is top notch. The paint used is the improved Light Gull Grey that Hobby Master is now using for their USN releases. There are no quality control issues and all the parts fit together well.

Highly recommended for the USN collector.
