strange error message when I try to post a comment

I just wanted to post a comment on another persons post, clicked on 'comment', wrote something, clicked on the 'Post' button and got the error 'Text required'. What went wrong?

Your non standard characters or quotes may be throwing it off. Can you try to comment on my reply here both with and with out non standard characters?

ok, thanks, you're right, my non-standard characters (though I believe german umlauts are part of the unicode standard and the codepage CP-1252) caused the problem. Didn't expect this to happen in 2016 ;)

and in normal post umlauts are no problem: "Brüssel"
