  • Classics vs. Modern Designs

I've been an avid collector for a couple of years (as most of you know at this point). I've collected many modern aircraft to build my collection to where it is now. Over the past few months my collection has started growing exponentially, but it always feels like something is missing. I've only collected modern aircraft (747,757,767, 777, 787, Airbus A320, A330, A340) but over the past few weeks I've started to fall for older aircraft (most of which were around before I was even a thought). So I've wanted the opinion of the forum. What is the best "classic" commercial plane to start with? What is your opinion do you prefer modern aircraft or do you prefer classic planes that will live through history during the birth of aviation? And of coarse what is the best scale to start with when going from moderns to "classics" let me know guys. This is an open Topic for opinions as well as advice. Thanks guys!

I prefer the "modern" era, i.e., which to me is post-911 (when the tri-jets disappeared from mainline US service). That being said I also have a heart for classic airliners. However, I try to locate them in liveries that could with a little imagination exist alongside my A320's and such.. For the most part, that means my classics are all freighters... Gemini Jets just released a FedEx MD10, which is a good example of my collecting criteria. I also have a couple DC-8 freighters (Super 70s) and a DC-9 freighter. So for what it's worth, I vote for anything by McDonnell Douglas.

I have a mix of moderns and classics with the latter consisting of Western Airlines and "family trees." For example, I recently added a Pacific Airlines and a West Coast Airlines F-27 to my collection. Both became Air West, then Hughes Air West, then Republic, Northwest, and finally, Delta. I grew up with all these classic airlines!

can't give opinion on the other factors, but as for scale 1/200 is the best IMO for classics. You can appreciate the AC fare better than smaller scale & still not take up too much space as w/ bigger scale.
