  • The RAF retires the L1011

I saw this story on a.net... I guess the last flying Tristar is now the Orbital Sciences 'Stargazer'.

no worries for me...or sadness, pity, etc. The 1011 looks 'fat' compared to the DC-10

Don't like the fatties much eh?

no, i don't like the fatties...I'm actually prejudiced against them. I do like the A380, B787 & A300, but i think because they remind me of my favorite fattie mammal; killer whale!

The killer whale is super cool. If you haven't seen it yet I recommend the documentary "Blackfish"

I like the lines of the '87 and the A300. The A380 I've not taken to yet.. It's just not a pretty airplane IMO.

Before I get flamed everyone must know I do own a handful of 1:400 A380s

I'm actually surprised they were still using the 1011 due to the higher maintenance cost.

So the dear old Tristar is going the way all good airliners go, to the scrapyard I've no doubt. It was one of my favourite airliners, that and the Boeing 747SP. The plane gave good service in civil use, Pan Am, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Delta to name but a few. If they are sold to others, I hope they mind them well.

I imagine the RAF took care of their Tristars. I don't know if they were all tankers and/or how many of them will get another shot at life elsewhere. As of several years ago I know there was a group at Lockheed that supported out of production (commercial) aircraft with spare parts; I don't know if this group still exists. Perhaps one solution would be to license the Tristar parts catalog to a third party who could support it profitably, or sell the Type Certificate altogether.

Thanks for your reply. In use with the RAF they served as jacks of all trades .Tankers ,troop carriers, and a combination of both troops and cargo, the troops sitting in the aft end of the cabin. They (the Tristars) came into their own during the Falklands crisis of course and the RAF hung onto them longer than even they thought.

I liked the TriStar. The engine installation seemed so much more refined compared to the DC-10. I also have a sort of soft spot for Lockheed which chose astronomical names for the aircraft they built. Great names like Vega, Electra, Orion and of course TriStar.

Might look a bit fat Fleetlordatvar, but not as overweight as the 747SP ;-) (not my cup of tea as well to be honest.
JAL1628, the Airbus A380 (although I am a huge Airbus supporter) is yet to grow on me too. When they eventually stretch it, it would have better proportions. Looks like a flying shipping container to me to be honest.

Sad to see these 'classic' airliners being phased out. I was shocked to hear that the Passenger MD-11's were gone already. Time stands still for no one.

I too am sorry to hear that MD 11's are no longer in use as passenger aircraft. As far as I know K.L.M. were the last airline to have them in use for fare paying passengers, and I'll miss them flying over my house @ 36k feet. I watch a large number of flights on Flightradar24.com, and weather permitting spot an MD11 before it's anywhere near me. Alas all good things come to an end. Congratulations on you fantastic model aircraft collection. Are they only for show on shelves or do you have a model airport? Mine are all on shelves alas as I've not got a large room to have an airport just yet, but who knows? I have only the scale 1;500, and even they seem to be losing favour now as 1;400 seems to be accepted as the norm. I note you have two Air Mauritius aircraft in your collection. I flew with them on more than one occasion and enjoyed the flights out from Heathrow, but oh dear, I was told to sit where I was told on both return trips. Last time I flew British Airways in both directions, sat where I wanted, namely a window seat, same one coming back as going, pure magic. As for the Tristar I think it's a more cohesive design than the MD 11 which looks like they added another engine on as an afterthought

Thank you very much for the kind words. But I'm afraid that my collection is actually a very modest collection indeed. There are some collectors with thousands of models. Just look at Fleetlordatvar's collection. Now THAT is an impressive collection. I also started with 1:500, then found 1:400 and later on an Inflight 1:200. The amount of detail on the 1:200 compared to the 1:500 led me to stop collecting 1:500 mostly. I might still get South African models in 1:500, but not for my African Collection. I'll continue with 1:400 and 1:200. The 1:200 is just so expensive and takes up so much space.

Talking of space, I unfortunately do not have the space to display the models at this stage. One day I want to get cabinets in which they can be displayed without someone having to dust them (at all). Have heard about damage to models during the dusting process. So until then, my models will live in their boxes.

I have a very long way to go with my African Collection. Such is life if you start late when the collection bug bites. So many nice models have been released, but they are difficult to get in the first place and that coupled with limited finances creates a bit off a catch 22.

Welcome to Dima. I hope you will love it here. Not so much bitching as on other forums. Everyone tries to get a long and tries to respect others views as far as possible. I feel that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and disagreements are quite acceptable, as long as it stays civil.

As to Air Mauritius. Yes, I am very happy to have found the Inflight 200 B707. I am still after a B747SP which was leased from SAA. One day.
The only Air Mauritius to come to Cape Town is the Airbus A319. Which I see quite often.

You are fortunate to have flown with Air Mauritius and British Airways. :-)

                Happy collecting and welcome again.

Thank you for you lovely message. I've reached the dizzy height (for me that is) of 86 models, most of which are Boeing 747SP's, 18 to be precise and 10 L1011's, and a large selection of Boeing 747-400's. An L1011-500 of BWIA arrived this very day, together with a Boeing 747SP of South African Airways. As you rightly say, buying is an expensive business. I'd love to buy in the larger scale but, like you, space is at a premium here. Perhaps I shouldn't be saying this, but I much prefer Starjets and Big bird to Herpa. On the older versions of the Boeing 747-100, 200, and 300 Starjets and Big Bird manage to put the antenna on the wing tips, show landing lights, and have a sharpness about them that sorry to say, Herpa do not. Non of my SP's have the aforementioned bits which I look for, and am prepared to pay that bit extra to get them. So far am very happy with DiMA even though I've not been with them very long at all, but am glad I've found them , As for dusting your models, perhaps you might try doing what I do, namely use a hair dryer on it's coolest setting and keep it on the move, NEVER spend too long on one model for obvious reasons. Kind regards, Geoff.

My collecting boet, you collection is not modest. Your collection is BIG, mine is excessive & possibly out of control especially since i only bothered to display >20 models for the last two yrs You collection has a tad higher relevance since the ZA Rand has been loosing it's value & the shipping cost to ZA is a lot i imagine.

Therein my friend lies the problem, namely the rates of exchange. Ireland never posts the rate of exchange for the Rand, only the U.S. dollar and oddly the Yen ?? I also note your comment re the shipping costs. I, among most collectors, note that if the model you're buying is cheap, the postal charges are mind blowing. Just as an exercise I had a go at comparing the prices for 1;400 and 1;500 for just one plane, namely the Boeing 747SP of Alliance Air and came up with the following figures. $35.83, and €37.49, I've yet to do a conversion rate for them but don't think there's all that much difference between them when push comes to shove.

                          Yes, shipping is very expensive.
For instance, I once purchased an Inflight B727 from Flying Tigers (who gave me great service and communication) at a cost of GBP41.66. The Shipping on that single model came to GBP51.00. So 96.22GBP for one Inflight 200 model. Then I had to pay import tax and vat to the SA Revenue Service too when it landed.

I thus have to buy a couple of models at once to ensure that the shipping can be spread over the total. But I did recently buy an Inflight 200 from Waffle for $95.16 and shipping worked out to $37.70. On two models it comes to $70.80 which is close to the price of a model. So for every couple of models that I buy, I spend the price of another one to get them to SA when VAT and taxes are added. I've had to take a break now for a couple of months to concentrate on other life's essentials. The downside now is that the price of the moels on the wantlist just goes up as they become scarcer and you need to buy them from more expensive retailers. Cool hobby and I love each model, but it is taxing on the budget.
